An archaeological assessment was carried out on 26 November 1998 at 35 East Essex Street (Bad Bob's Nightclub). The site lies at the eastern side of the original estuary of the Poddle/Liffey confluence. The Poddle culvert passes along the western limit of the existing building, which is undergoing extensive refurbishment.

One trench was opened in the basement area of the building, extending in a north-south direction. A 0.1m slab floor lay over c. 2m of a soft, grey material with some animal bone and shell remains, consistent with reclamation fill known to have been actively deposited by the early 1600s in the wide confluence of the Poddle and Liffey Rivers. The land was reclaimed by dumping deep deposits of organic refuse that was then held in place by timber revetments. No archaeological features were encountered.
