Dublin 1998:156 THE PROJECT ARTS CENTRE, 37 ESSEX STREET EAST, DUBLIN Urban medieval O155341 97E0102 An assessment was carried out at the site of the now demolished Project Arts Centre. One trench was excavated north-south through the centre of the site on 7 December 1998.
The Poddle culvert circumnavigates the southern perimeter of the site, and all foundation layout was kept at least 1m away from its outer wall. This trench excavation concluded the final phase of site investigation of this development area (Excavations 1997, 40-1).
Red brick cellar remains up to 3m deep were uncovered at the northern end of the trench fronting onto East Essex Street. The remainder of the trench consisted of reclamation fill with shell, bone, antler and leather scrap material, in keeping with extensive reclamation at the Poddle/Liffey confluence. There was no evidence of any archaeological structures. Helen Kehoe, c/o Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd, 2 Killiney View, Albert Road Lower, Glenageary, Co. Dublin.
