The site is within the medieval town, along the known line of the earthwork defences and bordered by an extant section of city wall on the southern side (along Ship Street Little). However, the assessment was not completed, and no medieval deposits were exposed. Initial investigations revealed the complete section of a red brick culvert, orientated north-south, which lies at 3.3m below present ground level and is thought to feed into the active Poddle culvert to the immediate south, outside the site. This culvert extends beneath an extant cellar (see below).

The assessment also found the partial remains of a cellar, the top of which lies 0.3m below ground level. A section of the brick roof, measuring 2.55m north-south by 3.2m, was also exposed, as well as a section of the northern wall. This wall was of limestone and had an entrance on the eastern side that was internally 1.2m wide by 1.4m high and was edged in brick. The cellar appears to have been backfilled with cinder/soil deposits but survives relatively intact.
