Dublin 1989:033 'Synod Hall', Christchurch, Wood Quay Ward Urban site O151339 The Synod Hall has recently been acquired by the Phelan Partnership who intend to convert the building to a heritage centre, Little structural alteration is envisaged. In advance of the excavation of a lift-pit and the erection of an entrance foyer at the rear of the site, a single test pit was examined in November 1989. This revealed that post-medieval activity had removed any surviving archaeological deposits down to a depth of at least 1.4m. As the proposed development will not penetrate the material below this level, no further excavation was carried out.The site has been associated with ecclesiastical foundations since the 11th century and the present 19th-century edifice incorporated a tower which formed part of the 17th-century church of St Michael. The work was funded by the developer. Claire Cotter, 2 Rathmore Lawn, South Douglas Road. Cork.
