Archaeological excavations were carried out here for a period of four weeks in 1976. Limited areas were investigated to try and verify the accuracy of Rocque’s 1773 map of the gardens as revised by Bernard Scales. The remains of cobbled garden paths were uncovered in the SE. quadrant of the gardens. A small quantity of late 18th century pottery and some clay pipes were recovered from the filling over the paths.
