Archaeological monitoring for the excavation of foundations for a new building at Convent Lane, Athy, was undertaken on 29 October 1999. The site measures c. 250m2, set well back from the frontage of Duke Street. The projected line of the medieval town wall, as depicted by Bradley et al., extends a short distance to the south of the property being developed. The exact line of the town wall is, however, unknown. The sides of the existing structure were widened, while the line of the existing gable ends was to be retained. The foundation trenches were 1.1m wide and 0.4-0.5m deep. The material removed consisted of tarmac and hardcore, red brick rubble and cement, and topsoil with bottles, crocks etc. No deposits were present that pre-dated the 20th century.
