Planning permission for construction of a slatted shed extension required an impact assessment to include testing. The development area is located within the zone of archaeological potential associated with an inland promontory fort (LE026–001(01)) and Woodford Castle (LE026–001(02)), an 18th-century structure possibly built on the site of an earlier castle. Both of these monuments lie to the north-north-west of the development area and at a minimum distance of c. 250m.
Two trenches were excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket, following which the sides and bases were cleaned by hand. In addition, the spoil was raked through in order to determine the artefact-bearing potential of the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of testing.
